Prashanti Kutiram, or the Abode of Peace, is the name of the campus’s most prestigious school for aspiring yoga instructors in the world. His name is conducive to yoga, western, but has to know what’s in for.

On reaching Bangalore, the student of Western yoga can help relieve himself in Indian culture, as everywhere you look here there is a mix of East and West. A mix of modern and ancient traditions of India can be enjoyed before the student is immersed in the original indigenous customs. The Prashanti Kutiram is about 30 kilometers north of Bangalore, but an office in the city can accommodate international travelers when traveling between the city and campus.

The Prashanti Kutiram is part of the Swami Vivekananda Yoga Anusamdhana Samsthan (SVYASA) or Yoga Research Institute in India. Not for everyone, however. You must be a dedicated student. The rules here are strict and intense study.

The SVYASA taught the original meaning and purpose of yoga. Intensive instruction in yoga and yoga-inspired therapy techniques are taught. This is not just a school about yoga positions or asanas. This school teaches the basic idea of Yoga, integrating mind, body and spirit. Here you will learn how to use the teachings of yoga in daily activities.

Swami Vivekananda is a scholar and a monk. He is a recognized expert in Indian yoga philosophy, and the Institute was named after him. He spoke once in the Parliament of Religions on the Hindu philosophy of religions. Unlike many other organized religions, Hinduism has all religions as sacred paths to God. There is no “one right path” but many viable pathways that lead to all the same God in different ways for supporters to understand and integrate.

The SVYASA is dedicated to research and education in this tradition. It takes its guidance documents in the original Sanskrit. Do not respond to Western citizenship, but it makes Westerners bow to Indian culture and tradition to the students once installed there. Only vegetarian meals are served on the ground without utensils. No shoes may be used in any classroom. Students are expected to stand for a lot of time. Many classes are conducted with students sitting on the ground, and only occasionally are the chairs provided for those who can not tolerate the necessary soil for long periods.

Discipline in the capital. Students must report for roll call or risk losing their accreditation. The assistance is of paramount importance. Another book-camp-like condition is the uniform, though not very military in appearance! Women should wear a tunic and pants called Indian dress cotton salwar kameez. This can be modified slightly to accommodate yoga postures. Men sport pants and baggy shirts. All students must remain in the land of 100% of the time. They can be recognized and identified students and yoga instructor by their uniforms. There are few exceptions to the attendance rules allowed, and only for documented reasons very good,.

With the popularity of yoga in the Western world today, there are many schools closer and easier than SVYASA where you can get a good education. But if you want the best yoga instruction, travel to Bangalore.
