Stoning is Not Islamic

The Iranian woman accused of adultery faced a death sentence. The punishment is currentlty on hold due to the pressure from the International community. Iran clergy is a shame for Islam!

While the Holy Prophet Muhammad (sa) forbade the barbaric custom of stoning for any reason, let alone for adultery, the extremist mullahs of Iran have chosen to remain ignorant. Before the Quranic law on the punishment for adultery was revealed, the Prophet Muhammad (sa) followed Judaic law.

St. John Chapter 8, V:4-5 of the Bible: ‘they say unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act. Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned’. Therefore, stoning is clearly prescribed in Bible not in Quran.

The Holy Qur’an, however, makes clear that only lashes, not capital punishment, are to be meted out for adultery(24:3-4).  In fact, the Holy Qur’an does not allow stoning for any reason.  As the Qur’an is final and supreme law, hadeeth that suggest otherwise cannot be accepted.

Stoning for adultery is a Jewish practice, not an Islamic practice

Deuteronomy 22:23-24 states: “If a man happens to meet in a town a virgin pledged to be married and he sleeps with her, you shall take both of them to the gate of that town and stone them to death—the girl because she was in a town and did not scream for help, and the man because he violated another man’s wife. You must purge the evil from among you.

The Prophet Muhammad (sa), on at least one occasion had a Jew and a Jewess stoned to death in accordance with that Mosaic law. (Bukhari).  However, it must be kept in mind that the Jewish tribes of Arabia voluntarily applied Mosaic law to themselves.  It was not the choice of Prophet Muhammad (sa) or Islam to apply Mosaic law.

Ashtiani’s accusers should be flogged, not her

At least four eye witnesses are required to even accuse a woman of adultery.  However, not a single witness is presented in this case.  Rather, all we have to go on is a baseless accusation and the decree of a majority bench.  Chapter 24:5 of the Holy Qur’an states, “And those who calumniate chaste women but bring not four witnesses — flog them with eighty stripes, and never admit their evidence thereafter, and it is they that are the transgressors.”  If the accusers are that keen on Shariah law, they should submit themselves to punishment and spare Ms. Ashtiani.

Shariah law is not in the least applicable to this situation

Shariah law is only applicable in a particular situation.  In today’s world, such a situation does not exist.  To implement Shariah law, it is imperative that it’s proponents themselves live an ideal Muslim lifestyle. There are over 70 sects of Islam today.  Therefore, who’s interpretation do we implement?  There is no cohesion and unity among the Muslim nations, or even within Muslim nations.  This anarchy is clear enough evidence that the first condition to apply Shariah law has not been met.

Moreover, today’s blind proponents of Shariah law fail to understand the example Prophet Muhammad (sa) set forth.  Prophet Muhammad (sa) never once imposed Shariah law on any Christian, Jew, or Pagan.  In fact, he never imposed Shariah law on any Muslim.  This, despite his undisputed sovereignty over all of Arabia.

Instead, Muhammad invited Muslims to voluntarily hold themselves to the high moral standard Shariah law requires.  Those who wish to enforce voluntary adherence are oblivious to the very spirit and purpose of Shariah law.  A voluntary acceptance of Shariah law is the only acceptable method of implementation.  Anything contrary is not Islam, but clear cut terrorism.
