Accordingto Muslims, Sharia law was founded from the words of Allah, as told in the pages of the Qur’an and traditions from the time of the prophet Muhammad. Muhammad was born around 570 AD in Mecca, a trading city in the deserts of Arabia. Not only was Mecca a trading post on the caravan routes, it was also a place of pilgrimage for people of many beliefs. People came to see the Ka’aba – a stone building believed to have been built by Adam at the beginning of time, later rebuilt by the prophet Abraham and Ishmael, his son.

A pagan tribe called the Quraysh, inhabited Mecca at this time. Muhammad was orphaned at an early age. He was raised by his uncle. He grew up to be a trader and married Khadija, his employer. Muhammad was middle aged when he bagn to talk about the messages received from Allah through the angel Gabriel. Others transcribed Muhammad’s words. Over the next twenty years, right up to his death, Islam became the main belief in Arabia. The Sasanian and Byzantine empires felt threatened by this new and popular religion. After Muhammad’s death, his revelations were collected and organized into the first Qur’an. Muhammad’s account of his life eventually formed the basis for the Sunnah

The rise of Islam brought all the tribes together under a single religion. As Islam is not just a religion, but a way of life. With this some sense of order and behaviour. Sharia began to take shape.

Sharia law is not just a justice system; it is much more than that. It is the basis for morals, home life, and treatment of others. Sharia in its purest form is a perfect system to live ones life, however like everything based on religion and belief – it is open to interpretation or misinterpretation, this is when Sharia law makes it into western media outlets and the less enlightened start to judge.
