The Five Books of Moses are believed to have been written between 1000 B.C. and 400 B.C. although, obviously, the stories were told orally for centuries before they were written down.
The writing of the books of Joshua, Judges, Ruth, Samuel and Kings overlapped the writing of the Five Books of Moses, occurring sometime around 600 B.C. These books are popularly known as the books of the Former Prophets, since they deal with the early history of Israel.
The books of the Latter Prophets are by authors who speak for God. These books, and dates in which they were written are: Isaiah (800-500 B.C.), Jeremiah (700-600 B.C), Ezekiel (600 B.C).
The books written by the “minor prophets” Hosea, Joel, Obadiah, Amos, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah an Malachi. Were written around 600-500 B.C. The dates of the books generally called the Writings are for the most part not known.
Only Daniel can be dated, having been written around 200 B.C. The rest of the books in this grouping are Psalms, Proverbs, Job, Ecclesiastes, Chronicles, the Song of Solomon, Ruth, Lamentations, Ester, Ezra and Nehemiah. The oldest copies of the Bibles are the Fragments known as the Dead Sea Scrolls, which date as far back as 300 B.C.
