Dr. David R Hawkins is one of todays manipulative cult leaders. His goal is selling books...and lots of them! He tells people he can show them the way to God and spiritual enlightenment and talks alot of scientific jargon that is very inaccurate if you look up true scientific data. Anyone who comes across his work...be VERY CAREFUL!

Obbop, your arguement was ridiculous. and i quote "I give the Mormons credit for decent human values. I have never heard of packs of Mormon youth spreading grafitti across a city or hanging out on corners, intimidating passers-by, dealing drugs and making life miserable in general for the populace."

have you ever read an article or heard on the news where they specify "packs of athiest youth" or "packs of christian youth" or "packs of jehovahs witness youth"

NO!
some people are so fricken narrow-minded...
This is all a load of bs. Christianity started out as a cult. It still is. Telling people that they have to do certain things or they will go to hell is wrong. Why is it okay to indoctrinate babies as soon as they're born into a religion thats only been around for 2000 years but must be right? Its all been created from the mind of man. Use your minds and relize that it may not be true.

I grew up in the Mormon religion. While the leader doesn't claim to be a divine being, he does claim to have a direct line of communication with God (Divine inspiration) that should not be questioned. He along with other prestigious members also believe that they too will one day be divine beings of their own worlds. Mormonism is most definantly a cult. I can look back at teachings as a child and see many "brainwashing" techniques that were used.

All Religious groups are Cults. Look in the Dictionary, the word Cult is an abbreviation of the word Culture. People follow different Religious culture. Thank God for this freedom.

I think you have a few wrong organisations in here. For example with mormonism, their leader doesn't believe they are a divine being nor do they use power or control on people. Their members are free to do what they want, thats there choice. The same goes for JW's althought they do shune people if they don't follow.

The only one that I really see as a cult is the second one. I agree with Thelonious that the first bit of your definition is faulty. I mean, I'm a Wiccan, and most Wiccans believe we are all a part of the God and Goddess. But then, judging by this article, you'd probably think Wicca was a cult. I think a lot of the religions you named, like the Unity one and Eckankar, you don't like because they're different. I really don't see people teaching others how to send out positive energy or meditate as harmful and brainwashing... Do you?
I don't think the first part or your definition of a cult is very useful - it certainly would seem to include Chistianity and any messianic movement throughout history, yet you clearly intend to use it perjoratively.

More importantly I think there's a big difference between a religious figure who says, in effect, "I am divine and you are too" and one who says "I am divine, unlike the rest of you." One leads almost inevitably to hierarchy and control (see part 2 of your definition) and the other need not.

I don't know the internal structure or social dynamics of most of these groups, so I can't tell how isolating and controlling they are, but you certainly haven't convinced me that there's anything inherently cult-like about #1 or #3. Nor do #2 or #5 seem to fit your definition despite the fact that I would consider them cults.

Timothy Miller from the University of Kansas: If the term ["cult"] does not enable us to distinguish between a pathological group and a legitimate one, then it has no real value. It is the religious equivalent of the racial term for African Americans—it conveys disdain and prejudice without having any valuable content
