I’ve always wondered about this question and I’ve wondered if we can’t all live as people – just people. Without any distinction or separation along religious lines. I’ve always felt that religion has done more harm than good to the world. We’ve fought so many wars in the name of religion through the ages and still do. So, what good is religion really? Now, I am not saying that you stop believing in God or question the existence of God. Do believe in God and do worship God in whichever way you choose to worship Him. But, do you have to subscribe to any particular religion to affirm your faith in God? You can connect to God without buying into a broader set of beliefs.
Religion arouses dark emotions in people and makes them do things that they normally wouldn’t do. Religion brainwashes people into believing that something that others would consider bad and inhuman, is in fact good and worthy of reward. We think religion gives us an identity, but does it really? What it does is to give us a particular set of beliefs that you normally can’t question and have to blindly follow. It might be illogical to you, but yet you follow it. It might not make any sense, yet you follow. Religion blinds us to logic and reason. We don’t see things for what they are, but rather for what they should be.
Of course, there are good things in religion, but those good things are basic truths of life. You can follow all of those basic good things and be a good person, without having to wear a badge of any religion. We all know what is good and what is bad. Do we need someone to teach us about good and bad? Most religious sermons talk about things we already know of. They don’t give us any new ideas to be a better person.
Religion does more harm than good in my opinion. Religion divides us and creates strife. Religion sows seeds of hatred amongst us. Religion stereotypes people. Religion promotes a superiority complex (as in my religion is better than yours, or truer than yours, or “is the only truth,” etc). The cons far outweigh the pros when it comes to this question.
