Ancient Greece – Nearly all Ancient Greek religions are believed to have centered around the use of certain entheogens (psychoactive plants with a spiritual purpose), such as the mold Ergot which is high in LSA content. LSA is a raw undeveloped form of LSD and it is very potent. It is also believed that the prophecies of Delphic Oracles came while under the influence of gas vapors.
Buddhism - According to the fifth precept of the Pancasila, Buddhists have to refrain from any intoxicants which would prevent mindfulness or cause heedlessness. However, Buddha himself went on a pure cannabis diet for 6 years of his life where he consumed nothing but marijuana.
Rastafari Movement – Rastafarians believe cannabis, commonly referred to as ganja, is a spiritual plant that was given to humans as a gift from Jah. It may be used to speak with god but shouldn’t be abused. Any drug besides Cannabis is frowned upon by Rastafarians, including alcohol. It is also believed in this religion that Jesus did not drink wine, rather, he drank grape juice.
Christianity – Christianity was one of the few religions where drugs did not play a role in it’s forming. Jesus drank wine on occasion throughout his life.
Hinduism – Hindu originated from the use of Soma. It is a plant, drink, and god in the hindu religion. Entheogenic use of drugs such as Cannabis is not uncommon among various Hindu sects. Cannabis is believe to be connected to the god Shiva who was said to have rested under it’s leaves on a hot day.
Islam – Muslims frown upon use of any kind of drug. They are banned and illegal in many Middle-eastern countries. However, many early muslims probably indulged in opium or cannabis because it was readily available in the Middle-east.
