Why do religious people always attack Athiests or Humists for their lack of belief? The faith that I am familiar with, Christianity often preaches about loving ones neighbours and spreading God’s love. I speak as an atheist – not the anti-Christ in case you were wondering – who is never closed minded about people’s beliefs. I don’t want it shoved down my throat, though when I walk in town or in Hyde Park. And it should not be taught in any capacity in schools. I have my reasons, and I will explain them and hopefully God’s children will take the time to analyse the argument as their brains have evolved to be capable of.

  1. Schools are set up to pass vital skills to the young and not indoctrination. Vital meaning necessary to maintain life. That is the definition as set out in the Collins Essential English Dictionary. What would help us maintain life both in the vast varieties of plants, animals and human beings are subjects such as Biology, Science and Mathematics (essential for calculating population statistics). Subjects such as languages are also vital in our education as it teaches the skill of passing on information and learned findings helping advance science and skills. We do not pray for the salvation of the Amazon Rainforest. We study its decline, using mathematics and then inform the world in both written and spoken forms. We identify these trees by means of Biology.
  2. Religion has a history of isolating the minority. Even where churches are the custodians of schools, it does not give equal opportunity of integration. A better use of time would be to teach all children of all religions for a greater understanding of cultures and highlighting the importance of coexistence.
  3. Most of all there just isn’t enough time in the day for maths and faith. The one teaches us discipline of finding the answers and the other teaches us that there is just no need to know how, but only that it is “truth”. The latter of course is not a great foundation for scientific research.

What is most frustrating is the old familiar argument that Darwin’s theory of evolution is just a theory. Nobody proclaims that Music Theory is only a theory. It’s a way of understanding how musical chords and melodic phrases are put together. Thus following the definition as explained by the Collins Essential English Dictionary, “A set of ideas based on evidence and careful reasoning, which offers an explanation of how something works or how something happens.”

As apposed to “An idea or opinion”. With so many religions, is this second definition not the most applicable to the ascent of Christ or the revelations to Mohammed?

The short of the situation is the fact that (yes fact) it is impossible to reason with an irrational theory. Thus I will join the legions of rational thinking individuals worldwide to make it a little more difficult for the irrational majority to suppress the needs of the minority. The same minority that is doing groundbreaking work in finding causes and cures for viruses and helping preserve the beauty of the world every day. Who are the real custodians of the world?

I think i would just be happy if the world stopped bickering about religion and let people live their lives freely

Interesting thoughts. I wrote my views in an article on Triond,(what is a Christian? The story of baby wanted). It houses my view of how I look at certain aspects of ‘religious Christians’.
I read yours and lean towards your way of thinking.
