Gods of Olympus

                                                                      Zeus

According to legend Zeus was the last son of the titans Cronus and Rhea . Cronus believed that he would be dethroned by one of his sons so he devoured his children at birth . The infant Zeus was spirited away by his mother and raised in Crete . When he was old enough he challenged his father and defeated him with the help of a single bolt of lightning . He also forced his father to regurgitate his other two sons – Poseidon and Hades .

                                                                 Poseidon

He was the god of sea and was given fiefdom after helping his brother kill Cronus . Like unquiet sea he is capable of great wrath ; like the calm and abundant sea he is also capable of being very kind . He once plotted with Hera against Zeus but was punished by being made to build the walls of Troy.

                                                               Hades

Brother of Zeus and Poseidon , Hades made the underworld his kingdom . He is a grim god , but is not satanic ; and the underworld is not a place like actual hell but is shadowy . However he was feared by all to the extent that his name was not spoken out aloud .

                                                                 Hera

Hera was the jealous wife of Zeus . She was also actually Zeus’ sister . She was originally a Earth God . The origin of their stormy marriage was the fusion of their cults .

                                                                  Hermes

Son of Zeus and the messenger of the gods , Hermes is depicted commonly by winged sandals and the staff of a messenger .

                                                                 Athena

With an owl as her symbol , she is the goddess of wisdom , war and crafts . She also decides the fate of warriors in battle . She is said to have sprung fuly armed from Zeus’ head after devouring her pregnant mother , Metis .

                                                                      Apollo

The son of Zeus and the twin brother of Artemis , Apollo is one of the most complex  and interesting Greek Gods . He is paired up with music , prophecy and archery . He is also a healer . One of his sons  , Asclepius is such a skilled healer that he was punished by Zeus for interfering with divine control over life and death .

                                                               Artemis

The twin sister of Apollo , she is the goddess of the moon , the wilderness and wild animals . She usually is depicted as a huntress and her main attribute is chastity .When Actaeon accidently saw Artemis and her nymph’s bathing naked she turned him into a stag and had her dogs tear him apart . When one of her nymph’s  was seduced by Zeus she turned her into the constellation Ursa Major . Artemis was tricked into killing her lover Orion by Apollo .
