Old-Fashioned Faith

We live in a world where constant efforts to improve things make it easy to discard ideas, objects, or practices on the assumption that the new way will always be better.

We live in a world where constant efforts to improve things make it easy to discard ideas, objects, or practices on the assumption that the new way will always be better. In spiritual matters, this is not necessarily the case. My research and personal experience have shown me that some of the old models still work.

For instance, the spiritual principles held by many of the forefathers were, are, and will continue to be sound and effective beliefs. They are beliefs essential to a happy, productive life.

Few Americans today are aware of the supreme importance many of America’s founding fathers attached to religion when they constructed a new society that they hoped would give birth to the first free people in history.

You may not know that the settlers at Jamestown erected a cross when they landed. The Pilgrims at Plymouth gave thanks to God for their blessings. Thomas Jefferson referred to God in the Declaration of Independence. And the early Congresses repeatedly called on presidents to declare days of prayer and thanksgiving to God.

In his book, A Worthy Company, Dr. M. E. Bradford’s penetrating research proves that fifty (and perhaps fifty-two) of the fifty-five framers of the United States’ Constitution were Christians – not humanists, deists, or agnostics, but Christians! They were men of The Book who were mindful that those who govern “would be held accountable to a Higher Authority for the use they made of their special powers.”

I do agree that you have to live in the 21st century and keep in mind of our faiths and if someone is an atheist, then I still think that morals and ethics are worth sticking too. An interesting issue with a very personal opinion – all the ingredients for a good article.

Very interesting peice!I also believe that the old priciples can work, however; in order to do so something would have to happen for everyone to renew their faith. Many have abandoned the old faith because of change/technology in the everchanging world, even many churches are now considered to be businesses. The truth of the matter is that it is religion that actually changed the face of the world and it really is a shame what is happening to it now.Excellent work giftarist, very thought provoking!

Religion has managed for centuries to instil ethics and moral principles in people – not an easy task if people were non-believers. Religion has been behind many great achievers.
