Rastafarianism was created in the 1930’s in the soul of Jamaica which was founded by working class black people.
The original reason of being a ‘Rasta’ was to make a social stand against the white middle class workers.
They believed that that they were taken to the Caribbean by slave traders and were robbed of their African past. They wanted to recapture their African heritage and celebrate.
Although now Rastafarianism is seen as every day life instead of a highly organised religion.
Leonard Howell was known as the ‘first Rasta’ set up the first ever Rastafarian commune of 5000 people at St Catherine in Jamaica. He was one of the first to stand for the Black African’s and protested against the suffer what was caused.
From then Rastafarianism was quickly spread around the world, which was also helped a GREAT deal by Bob Marley, a very famous Reggae singer who believed in the Rastafarian religion. The popstar from Jamaica brought out Reggae to the world and populated vastly around Europe, Africa and America.
Bob Marley’s lyrics were full of relations to Rastafarianism, and enclosed the spirit of movement. In addition some Rasta’s had dreadlocks and smoked cannabis. This was not worn by all Rastafarian’s but in their bible it supported dreadlocks.
Smoking cannabis(also known as Ganja to Rasta’s) for them, is to regard spiritual acts often also smoked while reading the bible.
Today there are thought to be over one million Rastafarians in the world and still growing.
