What is The Church Coming to?

The controversial "Toronto Blessing" which is supposedly caused by a Kundalini spirit and the New Age infiltration of the church is of concern to mainstream churches. Many of the controversial programmes which have promoted these ideas are connected to the swiftly growing God Channel which is setting up sattelite stations worldwide. Traditional churches claim that many heresies are being spread by religon programming on this channel. What is the evidence on this strange phenomenon?

Some of what is going on in this video is more like the case of a demon possessed boy mentioned in the Bible than anything Christian.  Read these Bible passages and decide for yourself:  Matthew 17:14-20; Mark 9:14-29; and Luke 9:37-43.  These mention a man who came to Jesus and  knelt before him telling Jesus that he had brought his son to be healed.  He was the man’s only child and the man asked for mercy on the boy.  He was possessed by a spirit that had robbed him of speech, suffered from seizures and whenever the spirit took hold of the boy he would scream, be thrown to the ground and his body would start jerking violently.  He would foam at the mouth and often fall into the fire or into the water.  The spirit was trying to destroy him.  The man brought his son to the disciples, and asked them to drive out the spirit and heal the boy, but they could not.

Jesus said, “O unbelieving and wicked generation, how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy here to me.”   Jesus asked the boy’s father, “How long has he been like this?” and the father told Him he had been like that from childhood, and Jesus healed the boy, and told the spirit “You deaf and mute spirit, I command you, to come out of him and never enter him again.”

The spirit cried out in a loud sharp voice, then jerked the body of the boy violently and came out. And the boy was healed at that very moment. The boy looked so much like a dead person that many said, the boy was dead. But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him to his feet, and the boy stood up. And Jesus gave the boy back to his father.
The Bible speaks of the believer needing to test the spirits and of discernment of spirits being a gift of the Spirit.  Discerning of spirits is the supernatural ability given by the Holy Spirit to see the source of a spiritual manifestation and know whether it is of God (Acts 10:30-35), of the devil (Acts 16:16-18), of man (Acts 8:18-23), or of the world.  Discerning of spirits must be done in the power of the Holy Spirit; He bears witness with our spirit when something is or is not of God. The gift of discerning of spirits gives the gifted believer power to detect the realm of the spirits and their activities. It implies spiritual insight and the revelation of the activity of the enemy and his forces. It is a gift which protects and guards the Christian life, so why do these people all seem to be so deceived?
I was surprised by many of the manifestations presented in the clip and by obvious inaccuracies such as Todd Bentley claiming to have an angel called Emma, when no angels in the Bible are female, all are male and only three are names.  Those three all have Hebrew names, not English/American names.  It also seems strange that those who claim to have had the Toronto Blessing and who are experiencing odd manifestations all claim that they are the same things which happened in Acts 2.  Read from verse 1-15 and what is going on there is that people are speaking in many foreign languages and this has hearers confused, so they think they are babbling as they are drunk, but in verse 15 Peter pointed out to the crowd that “These people are not drunk, as some of you are assuming. Nine o’clock in the morning is much too early for that.”  They aren’t flinging themselves around, aren’t acting like they have been smoking marijuana or have consumed a lot of alcohol, they’re just speaking in different languages.  There is nothing in Acts chapter 2 to suggest that they are barking like dogs, screaming, rolling about on the floor, dropping like flies, being covered by glitter, or acting hysterically laughing or crying.  In Galatians 5:23 Paul said that the fruit of the Spirit was self control.  Where is these people’s self control?  Proverbs 25:28 says “Whoever has no rule over his own spirit is like a city broken down, without walls,” which also suggests that these people are behaving in an unscriptural manner.
So, what do we know about Kundalini Yoga and why are they comparing these charismatic phenomena to it?  Kundalini Yoga is a physical, mental and spiritual discipline for developing personal strength, character and consciousness.  Those who practice Kundalini yoga, call it the yoga of awareness because they believe that it expands sensory awareness, enhances intuition, and merges ones consciousness with the infinite consciousness of God, and of Universal knowledge.  The goal of Kundalini yoga is to cultivate and harness the unlimited creative and spiritual potential which adherents believe exists within every human being.  It is mentioned in the Upanishads associated with the Krishna Yajurveda, which originated in India. John Woodroffe wrote about it in a book using the pen name Arthur Avalon.  He translated Sanskrit texts and called the book The Serpent Power: The Secrets of the Tantric and Shaktic Yoga.  This appears to be the roots of the Western occult adaptation of the practice.

This seems like a New Age practice, which is being taught in New York, but the next video is more like what is going on in the churches which are connected to the so-called “Toronto Blessing” phenomenon.

What does the overall evidence indicate?  Definitely a move away from Judeo-Christian beliefs.  People seem to be looking for some kind of supernatural experiences but much of the phenomenon has been written off as mass hypnosis, auto-suggestion, trickery and people’s willingness to conform to what is going on around them.  As people, especially the young, look for a church experience which is entertaining and unusual, the emerging church appears to be one which is keen not just to “tickle the ears” but one which is looking for some kind of new manifestation of the supernatural.

No matter what antics false churches are up to, God through Christ is victorious and the church is alive and well. It would be good if members would read and understand the kundalini spirits. Barking and crawling on the floor are obvious works of darkness. But some have itching ears. Proverbs 4:18 The path of the just is like a shining sun, that shines ever brighter unto the perfect day. The way of the wicked is like darkness; they do NOT KNOW what makes them stumble.

Very good article and videos. In the name of Jesus I rebuke and bind every wild dog representing false religion, witchcraft, and perversion, that would hound the life of God’s people. (Psalm 22:12)
