Petrarch or Francesco Petrarch, lyric poet and scholar, the first of the humanists, was born in Arezzo in 1304. His family moved to Pisa in 1311 and later to Avignon in France, where the papacy had established its seat in 1309. Petrarch studied the trivium (grammar, logic and rhetoric) for four years at Carpentras, and later civil law at Montpelier and bologna. On his return to Avignon in 1326 he prepared to enter the church having found the law distasteful.
