The name Saint Patrick, the phrase “illuminated manuscript”, and the title Book of Kells are household words for admirers of and visitors to the Emerald Isle. But the name, the phrase, and the title have a significance which transcends Ireland’s borders. Modern Western culture and education in fact may be in Ireland’s debt for the spread of Christianity and literacy, as suggested by episode #2 “Saints and Scholars” in the documentary film “In Search of Ancient Ireland”.
